Description
The German M34 Overseas Side Cap, affectionately known as the ‘Sciffchen’ (meaning ‘little ship’), was a staple headgear for German military personnel during the 1930s and World War 2. It’s design combined practicality with comfort, making it a favoured alternative to the more cumbersome steel helmet.
Our version, crafted from field-grey (Feldgrau) wool with a cotton interior, has been made with comfort in mind. Alongside this, the hat features two air vents which go a long way to ensuring the hat is able to breath, even during long periods of use. Much like the originals, our hats have adjustable ear flaps, which can be brought up and down, helping to keep your ears nice and snug even in the worst weather.
The front of the cap is adorned with a central cockade and an eagle insignia. The cockade features the red, white and black national colours, while the eagle clutches a swastika. The cap also often featured a soutache indicating the wearer’s military branch. For instance, infantry units often had white piping, while cavalry units were denoted by golden yellow. Our one doesn’t come with a soutache already attached, so the hat is able to be adapted to fit the specific impression you are pursuing.
