Description
Founded on 1 May 1840 by Grand Duke Louis II of Hesse, the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous was instituted to recognise extraordinary military service and civil merit. Named in honour of Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse – a key figure in the Protestant Reformation and a symbol of enlightened leadership – the order became one of the highest accolades which could be earned within the Grand Duchy. The Breast Star, typically awarded to high-ranking officials, dignitaries and senior officers, stood as the testament of the loyalty, faith and distinguished service of its wearer.
This meticulously crafted reproduction captures both the elegance and gravitas of the original decoration. Measuring approximately 9cm in diameter, the eight-pointed silver starburst is adorned with finely faceted rays that radiate outward. At its centre lies a vivid blue enamel medallion featuring a gilded profile of Landgrave Philip I. Surrounding the portrait is a white enamel band inscribed with the solemn Latin motto: “Si Deus Nobiscum Quis Contra Nos” (If God is with us, who can be against us?). On the reverse, a robust clasp and pin ensure the star can be securely fastened to ceremonial dress or uniforms.
Whether intended for historical reenactment, formal display or as a treasured collector’s piece, this reproduction stands as a faithful tribute to the rich traditions.
