The stielhandgranate was introduced in 1915 for use by the German Empire's armed forces and was widely used during WWI. The design of the grenade developed over the course of WWI, with features being added or removed to improve use. The grenade was in technological competition with Mills bomb series developed by the British military, which was introduced the same year as the stielhandgranate. After the German Empire's defeat at the end of WWI, and due to the collapse of industrial capability many projects were left and forgotten, including the stielhandgranate.
However, in 1924 the Weimar Republic revived the stielhandgranate and created the Model 24. This became the standard hand grenade of the Wehrmacht during WW2.
