December 1941’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbour was centred around the destruction of the US battle fleet – it was a success. It did not affect the three U.S. aircraft carriers, which were out at sea at the time. The US Navy began mass reconstruction of its navy and it grew tremendously. It was instrumental to the success of America’s island-hopping campaign, notably: The battle of Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the Battle of Okinawa.
By the end of the Second World War, the US Navy added nearly 1200 major combatant ships, including 99 aircraft carriers, 8 fast battleships and 10 prewar old battleships.
