The M34 Panzer Overseas Side Cap, nicknamed the 'Schiffchen' (little boat), was a practical alternative to the earlier padded beret, the Schutzmütze. Crews found the Schutzmütze hot, bulky, and interfering with radio headsets common in German tanks. The M34 side cap provided a more suitable fit for the cramped interiors of armoured vehicles like the Tiger or Panzer IV.

The black wool construction helped mask oil and grease stains common in armoured vehicles. This cap features a distinctive pink soutache, the traditional Waffenfarbe (colour of service) for German armoured units. It also includes a black, white, and red panzer cockade and a cap eagle. Its simple, foldable design made it highly portable, leading to its 'little boat' nickname due to it's silhouette when folded.
