Formed in 1940 as a civilian defence force, the Home Guard—originally known as the "Local Defence Volunteers"—was made up of those who were ineligible for active military service due to age, health, or essential civilian occupations. Often called "Dad’s Army," the Home Guard was tasked with defending Britain from possible German invasion, patrolling and protecting key infrastructure, and aiding civil defence.
