After the successful Dunkirk evacuation, Churchill decreed that a new joint combined force was required. This branch of service had the sole purpose of undertaking offensive amphibious operations against the enemy. Small-scale amphibious raiding forces were formed to raid coastal areas of enemy-occupied territory – this resulted in thousands of enemy troops being deployed to the coast and taken from other duties.
Combined Operations made a huge contribution to the successful outcome of the Second World War.
