Established in 1933, the Waffen-SS was the combat branch of the Schutzstaffel (SS), the paramilitary organisation initially formed to protect Nazi Party officials. Under Heinrich Himmler’s leadership, the Waffen-SS expanded from a small unit into a formidable military force during the Second World War, comprising of between 600,000 and 900,000 soldiers and officers, and even including volunteers and conscripts from numerous European countries.
