The 82nd Airborne Division, famous as the "All American" unit, played a major role in the Vietnam War. In January 1968, in response to the Tet Offensive, the division's 3rd Brigade (the "Golden Brigade") deployed rapidly to South Vietnam. They fought around Hué, Saigon, and the Mekong Delta for nearly 22 months.

During the jungle conflict, bright full-colour insignia compromised soldier camouflage. In response, the US Army introduced subdued insignia in 1966. This low-visibility insignia replaced the bright red, white, and blue colours of the 82nd Airborne patch with stealthy black and olive drab tones to protect troops in the field.

This reproduction features a one-piece layout combining the "AIRBORNE" tab and the square "AA" shield.
