The US Army first introduced subdued insignia during the Vietnam War in the mid-1960s. Bright yellow shoulder patches were too visible in the jungle and became tactical hazards. To protect soldiers, the military replaced the bright yellow background of the 1st Cavalry Division shield with olive green and black thread.
This reproduction badge is made with detailed olive green and black embroidery. It represents the historic Norman shield with a diagonal stripe and a silhouetted horse head. The patch measures 10.5 cm in height and 8 cm in width. A black merrowed border frames the design, and the back features a hook-and-loop panel.
