The SS-Ehrenring, unofficially called the Totenkopfring (translated to ‘Death’s head ring’) was one of, if not the most prestigious awards available to a member of the SS. It was not given by the state but rather a personal gift bestowed by Himmler himself. In 1949 manufacture of these rings was stopped and all rings of dead SS members were to be returned and stored in a chest at Wewelsburg Castle. Of the 14,500 rings made, 64% were returned, 10% were lost and the remaining 26% had a whereabouts unknown.
