Premium GD Metal Cyphers - Gold
Pair of Metal 'GD' Grossdeutschland Shoulder Board Cyphers in Gold.
The Grossdeutschland unit was formed from the Wacht-regiment Berlin, a ceremonial unit made up of the best drilled soldiers from other units. It became the infantry combat unit Infanterie-Regiment Großdeutschland in 1939 and served in campaigns in France, Belgium and Yugoslavia before moving to the Eastern Front and being expanded into the Großdeutschland Division in 1942. It remained a regiment within the division and was renamed Grenadier-Regiment Großdeutschland before finally being renamed Panzergrenadier-Regiment Großdeutschland, in 1943. As one of the best equipped units, it was considered ‘elite’ by many and is often mistaken as being part of the Waffen-SS when in fact it was part of the Heer.
These golden GD metal cyphers were worn on officer’s shoulder boards while NCOs were issued with silver coloured ones, and enlisted men wore the embroidered GD shoulder boards. These Premium reproductions have a smart gilt finish, and two prongs on the reverse for attaching to the shoulder board.
