The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was instituted in 1917 by King George V and later redesigned by King George VI in 1936.
This is the 2nd type of Knight Commander awarded from 1936 and is still awarded today. This award is a silver-coloured star with a radial check patterning, surmounted above by the King's Crown, and a central medallion on the cross that is surrounded by the Order's motto 'For God and the Empire' surrounded by a scarlet enamel. The centre of the star depicts the busts of King George V and Queen Mary.
This replica is of the Knight Commander/Dame Commander class, the Second highest of the order.
