The Knight Commander Cross Breast Star represents the Grand Officer level within the Order, reserved for those whose services are of extraordinary value to the nation. This version of the award is carefully crafted with a gilt cross enamelled in bright red. Alongside this, the cross also features a central black enamelled Bundesadler (Federal Eagle) intended to signify the unity and sovereignty of the nation. The cross is mounted on a pointed square, which draws inspiration from the Grand Cross of the Pour Le Mérite, one of Germany's most prestigious decorations.
