The Kriegsmarine was the Navy of Nazi Germany from 1935-45. It was one of the three official branches, along with the Heer and the Luftwaffe. Before the war broke out, Plan Z was ordered calling for Naval Parity with the British Royal Navy – this was shelved in favour of submarine programmes once the war had broken out. The Kriegsmarine assembled Wolfpacks which attacked British convoys during the first half of the war, the tactic was abandoned after U-boat loses mounted.
Following the end of the war, Kriegsmarine's remaining ships were distributed among allies and used mostly as minesweepers.
