Recipients of the 1939 Iron Cross, who continued to above and beyond the call of duty were awarded the Silver Oakleaves with Swords. The Oakleaves were introduced to further distinguish those already awarded with the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross.
Introduced in June, 1940, as an extension of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross. The Silver Oakleaves have a silvered finish to them and the reverse features fold over prongs for fitting.
The Knights Cross Silver Oakleaves with Swords was awarded to those who continued to show merit and bravery in combat.
