Originally created as a ceremonial guard unit in the 1920s, by the late 1930s the Grossdeutschland had grown into a regiment. Widely regarded as one of the German Army's most elite and well-equipped units, the Grossdeutschland saw action in France in 1940 and on the Eastern Front from 1941 onward. The unit was expanded multiple times and was reorganised as a Panzer Grenadier unit. By 1943, the Grossdeutschland was at division strength. All personnel serving in the newly designated Panzer Grenadier Division Großdeutschland wore the Grossdeutschland cuff title on the right sleeve of their uniform.
