By the end of World War Two, the Heer army had approximately 5.3 million soldiers. It was the land forces component of the Wehrmacht and was used between 1935-45. Hitler announced that the end goal was to have 36 divisions, it took just 17 months to achieve this. Coupled with operations and tactical methods, the German Army managed 2 quick victories using a new warfare style called Blitzkrieg (lightning war.) The Heer was notorious for its combat efficiency, besting the British and the Americans with studies suggesting that the British needed 45% more troops than the Germans to have an even chance of winning.
In total an estimated 13.6 million soldiers served the Heer before it was disbanded at the end of the Second World War.
