Introduced in May 1939, the Edelweiss Badge was a distinctive insignia worn by German Mountain Troops (Gebirgsjäger) on the upper right sleeve. Based on the earlier WWI version, it shifted from a blue/green cloth base to a field-grey (Feldgrau) one. Initially removed when soldiers transferred out of the unit, this rule was reversed in 1944, allowing continued wear. This officer’s version is hand-embroidered with silver bullion wire on a field-grey wool base.

Description
The Gebirgsjäger, or German Mountain Troops, were an elite branch of the Wehrmacht, renowned for their expertise in mountain and alpine warfare. Established in the early 20th century, they played a crucial role in several key campaigns during World War Two, including, but by no means limited to, battling it out in the treacherous mountains of Eastern Europe and Italy. These soldiers were trained to operate in extreme conditions, often navigating difficult landscapes in harsh weather. Their distinctive Edelweiss Badge stood out as a beacon, symbolising their specialised training and elite status amongst members of the German Army.
Our version of this iconic piece of insignia has been crafted with this rich history in mind, making it ideal for the completion of a Gebirgsjäger uniform. Featuring an intricately hand-embroidered Edelweiss flower on a field-grey wool base, the badge measures approximately 1.5 inches in diameter, and, much like the original, is perfectly sized to be worn on the upper right sleeve of the uniform, exactly as it was worn during the war.
