The Life Guards are one of the most senior and prestigious regiments in the British Army. Together with the Blues and Royals they make up the Household Cavalry, two of the seven Guard regiments making up the Household Division, the reigning monarch's official bodyguard.

As can be expected with such a stately position, the ceremonial helmet of the Life Guards is steeped in tradition. It is heavily influenced by the ‘Albert’ style of helmet, introduced to Britain by Prince Albert when he married Queen Victoria in 1840. Prince Albert took a great interest in the appearance and structure of the British army, and the design of the helmet has essentially remained unchanged since.

It is made up with superbly finished silver and gold gilt plates. The front has an 8 pointed Guard's star with the cross of St. George. The motto of the Life Guards, "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" (French for “Shame on Those who Think Evil of it.") sits in the middle of this star. The liner is leather, tied with a drawstring. Green leather backs the ornate gold-ringed chinstrap, which is secured with a Tudor rose. Elegantly attaching atop the helmet is a synthetic, white horsehair plume, which hangs approximately 40cm from the top point of the helmet.
