WW2 British South Atlantic Star Ribbon

This iconic ribbon belongs to the Atlantic Star, a campaign medal instituted in May 1945 to honour British Commonwealth forces who served in the Battle of the Atlantic—the longest continuous campaign of the Second World War Traces of War.

The ribbon’s design, crafted personally with input from King George VI, evokes the swirling colours of the Atlantic Ocean.

Award Criteria

• Awarded to naval personnel for six months operational service afloat in the Atlantic, Home Waters, North Russia convoys, or the South Atlantic between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945.
• Aircrew members qualified after two months of operational service against enemy targets at sea in qualifying areas, provided they'd already earned the 1939–1945 Star.
• Merchant Navy personnel were likewise qualified under similar conditions.
• Exemptions: Awarded regardless of service duration to those wounded, killed, or awarded a gallantry medal or Mention in Dispatches while serving in these areas
