Badge of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle
Badge of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle.
Founded in 1701, the Order of the Black Eagle was the highest award of the Kingdom of Prussia, and was awarded for varying military and civil merits at the behest of the King of Prussia. This is the badge of the order, and would have been worn from a broad yellow moire sash, or the chain of the order around the neck.
The badge is a metal gilt in the shape of a maltese cross with black Prussian eagles between the arms. the cross is enamelled a deep blue, similar in colour to the Pout Le Merit, and the centre medallion of the cross bears the monogram of FR, for 'Fredricus Rex'.
