The rank of Gerfreiter is equivalent of a Lance Corporal in the British Army. Historically in German armies, a Gefreiter was an experienced soldier who by virtue of seniority was exempted from more menial duties.
Single downward pointing chevron worn on the left sleeve, shows the wearer is of the rank Gerfreiter.
