2nd Armored Division Patch - Hell on Wheels
US Division Patches - 2nd Armored Division Badge. Nicknamed “Hell on Wheels" the division's Sherman Tanks and troops were made more famous by the recent film Fury.
The 2nd AD can trace their history back to 1940. They have fought during WW2, and elements of the division fought in Vietnam and the first Gulf war.
Elements of the Division were among the first to take part in allied ground operations against axis forces during the Second World War. This was during Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa in November 1942. The 2nd AD then took part in the allied landings of Sicily (Operation Husky), before being redeployed in Normandy, landing on Omaha beach on D-Day +3. Here, they took part in heavy fighting, surrounding the Waffen 'Das Reich' and the 17th Panzergrenadier Divisions. The division then pushed across France, and also fought during the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes. In July 1945, the 2nd AD was the first American unit to enter Berlin.
The 2nd Armoured Division have featured in many documentaries. They have also featured in an episode of 'Band of Brothers'. In the film 'Fury', it follows men of the 66th Armored Regiment, 2nd AD in their epic battles against superior German forces.
This is a fantastic reproduction of the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by the unit. Embroidered onto a Triangle, the blue represents the Infantry, the Red for Artillery and the Yellow for Cavalry. There is a black tank track surrounding a cannon barrel, behind a red lightning flash. This design was approved in 1940 and is a combination of the WW1 Tank Corps and the dated 1930's 13th Cavalry patch.Â
At the top of the patch is the number '2' depicting the patch is for the 2nd Armoured Division.
