1957 War Merit Cross - 2nd Class
In 1957 a series of awards were re-designed with the removal of the swastika. This was done to allow WW2 veterans serving in the newly formed Bundeswehr to wear medals they had earned previously. The medal was originally intended to replace the earlier non-combatant Iron cross and ribbon. Like the other War Merit crosses it could be awarded either with or without swords. This version with the swords would have been presented to military personnel for acts of courage and bravery but not directly in the face of the enemy.
Fine reproductions of the 1957 War Merit Cross, sold with 6 inches of the according ribbon.
