The Grand Cross of the Iron Cross was a Prussian and later Imperial German award given in recognition of outstanding military success. The Grand Cross was the highest class of the Iron Cross and was founded in 1813 and renewed in 1870 and 1914.
This is the 1870 version of the award, instituted as a result of the Franco-Prussian War and was awarded only 9 times, mainly to royalty and senior commanders of the Prussian Army.
This award comes complete with ribbon for wearing around the neck.
