The SS (Schutzstaffel) was a major paramilitary organisation under Hitler and the Nazi Party. They were tasked with the detection of actual or potential enemies of the Nazi state, the neutralisation of any opposition, policing the German people for their commitment to Nazi ideology, and providing domestic and foreign intelligence. The SS was the organisation mostly responsible for the genocide of an estimated 5.5-6 million Jews during the holocaust.
The Waffen-SS was the combat branch of the Schutzstaffel and combined combat and policing functions. The chief of the SS was Heinrich Himmler and like the SS, he did not make it past May 1945 (suicide by cyanide.)
