1957 War Merit Cross 1st Class.
In 1957 a series of awards were re-designed with the removal of the swastika. This was done to allow WW2 veterans serving in the newly formed Bundeswehr to wear medals they had earned previously. The medal was originally intended to replace the earlier non-combatant Iron cross and ribbon. Like the other War Merit crosses it could be awarded either with or without swords. This version with the swords would have been presented to military personnel for multiple acts of courage and bravery committed not directly in the face of the enemy.
Fine reproductions of the 1957 War Merit Cross 1st Class, complete with pin back.
