Original South African 70 Pattern Webbing Set
Original South African 70 Pattern Webbing Set.
This original South African 70 Pattern webbing features four magazine pouches designed to hold two R4 rifle magazines each. It has two ‘hippo’ pouches that sit at the rear of the kit, over the wearer’s kidneys. These are intended for holding ammunition belts for the units’ machine gunner. There is also a haversack that can be worn on the front or the rear. The webbing also includes a water canteen holder and an original water canteen.
The South African M70 webbing was used by both South African Defence Forces and the South West African Police, replacing the earlier 61 Pattern. The South African 70 Pattern was based on the popular British 58 Pattern webbing, with some adjustments for the hotter African climate. The webbing sets were used extensively by South African forces during the 1970’s and 1980’s. The R4 magazine pouches indicate that this webbing is a 1980- issue set, as the R4 replaced the FN FAL as the standard service rifle in 1980.
This is an excellent piece of original South African 70 Pattern surplus webbing that is assembled and ready to use.
Please note that due to their surplus nature there may be some signs of wear or some variation in design.
