The Legion of Honour is the highest French decoration for military and civilian merits and was originally instituted by Napoleon in 1802.
This is the Grand Cross version of the award which is the highst of five classes.
The front has a depiction of Marianne, a national symbol of the French Republic. On the reverse are crossed tricolores and the Legions motto "Honneur et Patrie" ("Honour and Fatherland")
This excellent reproduction comes with the a red sash.
A fine piece of hard to come by insignia which would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
