This sleeve insignia denotes the rank of Gefreiter. This is the category ordinary soldiers were promoted to after 6 months, assuming that they demonstrated sufficient prowess. If deemed to need more work then they were granted the rank of Oberschutze.
The badge is an inverted triangle of silver coloured tresse on a field grey wool backing, to be sewn onto the sleeve.
